“Koi Good News “ by Zarreen Khan is her second book . I found this title interesting and it drew my attention instantly into this book. That’s how I took part in a giveaway ,and guess what? I won it. I immediately got hooked on to the book and from the time go it was a laughing riot. The narration is hilarious and very relatable especially if one is married . A satire or humour gets the punch when it stand close to reality ,the writer has very well managed to do it throughout the story.
This book is about a couple Mona – Ramit Deol and their journey to parenthood .Ramit refers to his family as a bheed ; they have a family forest and not a family tree. Having a baby is obviously a couple’s call but its never a private matter when one is a part of Deol family. First thing a couple is expected to do after marriage is deliver a baby so what happens when this couple dares to remain childless even after 4 years of marriage amidst this inquisitive family .Initial part is about how the couple dodges the pestering of family for a kid and their public discussion of their private life, all with a pinch of humour .Then it moves on to the couple’s journey of how they fulfill the good news. The couple relation is very well portrayed. Mona is feisty, vocal where as Ramit is from Ekta Kapoor’s “K “clan who replies to messages with just “K”, docile and in control. The other characters like their Laila- Majnu neighbours and Mona’s sister Shania with her strange phases and fancies are all pleasant appearances which enhances the main track . The advices and experiences the couple faces through “their” journey is very realistically narrated without losing any wit.
Many of the subtle analogies and filmy references by author have hit the right notes . At many points I ended up laughing loud and had to actually read many extracts to my family who looked cluelessly at me, to prove my sanity . If you look for deep literary stuff or imagery you might miss that in this book. There is no much of twist and has a very predictable storyline. As the name of the books hints the story is about how the couple tackles the inevitable question after marriage – Koi good news? So there is no scope for surprise there . This is one of those books , once you get the kick is irresistible to keep back . As you see in a Bollywood posters – if you are looking for paisa vasool entertaining read ,This is it. By the way the book will be soon made into a movie. This book is hilarious and totally engaging.
